Rapid Relief Team - Family Investment

Conflict of Interest?

Investigating a financial investment made by the charity, Rapid Relief Team, into a business owned by the family of a UK brethren leader, whilst he was also trustee of the Rapid Relief Team.

Rapid Relief Team

The Rapid Relief Team (RRT) is a charity connected to the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, essentially they provide free catering, in the form of burgers and drinks to 'Blue Light' emergency services at incidents, supporting other charity events with free catering and delivering food boxes to those in need. The Rapid Relief Team charity was established as an integral part of demonstrating the public benefit provided by brethren connected charities, in the successful appeal by the brethren connected charity, Preston Down Trust, to the UK Charity Commission in 2012-2013, following the loss of their charitable status.

Rapid Relief Team Trading Ltd

In 2018 the trustees/directors of the Rapid Relief Team, included Glen Stacey (now one of the three senior brethren UK leaders) and Rod Buckley (the current UK brethren spokesman). The RRT charity in June 2017, established a wholly owned subsidiary trading arm called Rapid Relief Team Trading Ltd.

Accounts filed for the RRT charity for year ending 30th June 2018, show that they had made two loans totalling £200,000 to Rapid Relief Team Trading Ltd. These loans were to be repaid by June 2023 at 2% above the basic rate. The accounts also show that Enfield Safety, a company in which Glen Stacey was a director, had donated £6,000 to the RRT charity in that financial year.

Demco Group Ltd

Demco Group Ltd, is a company incorporated in December 2017, by the Rabey family, brethren members based in Peterhead, Scotland. The directors were Paul Rabey and his sons Craig, Dale, Edward and Mark. They each owned a 20% share. Demco was a holding company for the other businesses owned and operated by the Rabey family, including Caledonian Global Ltd, which trades as Caledonian Stone and supplies stone paving and tiles.

Oct 2018

On the 3rd October 2018, Demco Group incorporated two new companies. The companies were called UWG Global Ltd and UWG Europe Ltd. Both companies changed names on the 30th October 2018, becoming Uniwipe Global Ltd and Uniwipe Europe Ltd. They were both to change names again, Uniwipe Global becoming Nuvik Global Ltd in December 2019 and Uniwipe Europe Ltd becoming Nuvik UK Ltd in April 2023. Both companies are still active and we will use the current names for consistency.

On incorporation Nuvik UK Ltd had five directors, Paul Rabey and his four sons, Craig, Dale, Edward and Mark. The shares of the company were split 90% owned by Demco Group Ltd and the other 10% being owned by Rapid Relief Trading Ltd.

On incorporation Nuvik Global Ltd was owned by two shareholders with the Rabey family owning a 60% share and the other 40% of shares being owned by Vision Accelerator Pty Ltd. Vision is an Australian based brethren owned investment fund. In October 2019 there were changes filed that initially showed Demco Group Ltd owning a 100% of the shares before in December 2019 a change was made to show 60% of the shares were owned by Demco Group Ltd and 40% by Vision Accelerator Pty Ltd.
Picture
Nuvik Global had six directors, including three from the Demco Group, Dale Rabey, Edward Rabey, Mark Rabey along with three other directors Ronald Arkcoll, Glen Stacey and Richard Blackledge.  Arkcoll was the head of the Rapid Relief Team charity in Australia, Stacey was a trustee of the Rapid Relief Team charity in the UK and Richard Blackledge is a brethren businessman from Shrewsbury based Arrow County Supplies.

At this point it would appear that a new company had been founded to produce industrial style cleaning wipes, these wipes were called Uniwipe and Ultragrime. The set up was a 'typical' investor set up with members of the investment team from the charity Rapid Relief Team becoming directors of Nuvik Global Ltd.

Family Connections

The Demco Group was set up by Paul Rabey and his four sons, his daughter Lynette, however is not a named director or shareholder. Lynette is married and is now Lynette Stacey, she is the wife of Glen Stacey. The same Glen Stacey who was a trustee of the Rapid Relief Team charity at the time of the investment in Demco Group Ltd.

Therefore, we have a charity (RRT) where one of its trustees (Glen Stacey), has made an investment through it's subsidiary (Rapid Relief Team Trading Ltd), in a company (Demco Group Ltd). Thus meaning, Glen Stacey is a trustee of the charity and a director of the family business (Nuvik Global Ltd). This would appear to be a conflict of interest as Stacey would have "a foot in both camps". It could be viewed as charity funds that were raised by donations, then being used to support a business belonging to one of the charity trustees.

Growth & Buyback

Accounts for the Demco Group show a company in remarkable growth. Group financials for the year ending 2018 show the company had £600,000 in assets. The latest set of accounts for year ending 2024, show a business with sales revenue of over £22.6 million, after tax profits of nearly £5 million and assets of over £12 million. Truly exceptional growth in a six year period. One could say it was a very good investment for the Rapid Relief Team.

In October 2022, Ron Arkcoll and Glen Stacey resigned their positions of directors in Nuvik Global Ltd. This would indicate that Rapid Relief Team Trading Ltd and Vision Accelerator shares had been bought by another party. The Demco Group  published accounts for year ending December 31st 2022 confirm that the shares were bought by Demco Group for over £2.3 million.

At this point Glen Stacey was no longer a trustee of the Rapid Relief Team, having resigned as a trustee in January 2020, Ron Arkcoll was still a trustee of RRT in Australia. Glen Stacey has since become one of the leading two or three brethren members in the UK. He is a director of the Australian, GAP Global Pty Ltd, also known as the Global Advisory Panel, which is similar to an "executive board" and authorises all major decisions for the brethren globally.

Conflict of Interest

We were unable to find any declared conflict of interests in the published accounts of Rapid Relief Team, Rapid Relief Trading Ltd, Nuvik Global Ltd or Demco Group Ltd, over the time of the investments in Demco Group Ltd. Though, it is interesting that the Richard Blackledge who was a director of Nuvik Global alongside the Rabey's, Arkcoll and Stacey, resigned in October 2019, following the appointment of his son Sam Blackledge as a trustee to the Rapid Relief Team charity.

We have passed on the above details to the UK charity commission to investigate.
